Participants will learn to swim in a zero-depth pool at Contra Loma Regional Park. Lessons are appropriate for children of all skill levels. On the first day of each session, all participants will be assessed to ensure appropriate class placement. Swimmers will be assigned to a class with other students who have similar skill levels. Given the low (6:1) student to teacher ratio, lessons will be tailored to meet each student's needs. All classes follow the American Red Cross’ Learn-to-Swim guidelines. Instructors and lifeguard staff work to ensure personal safety while providing a fun, friendly atmosphere for learning. Classes take place four days per week for two weeks. Participants, VCRC staff, and volunteers will be transported to Contra Loma by bus (made possible through EBRPD). There is a $10 registration fee. Junior Lifeguard Training
This dynamic inclusive program provides an introduction to Water Safety/Rescue, First Aid, and CPR in a fun & challenging environment. Each day participants enjoy a variety of beach and water activities designed to promote fitness, self-esteem, and teamwork. Focus is given to personal safety and awareness of water safety for others. In addition to the extensive core curriculum, a specific theme will be emphasized each session. Children will receive a commemorative pin recognizing their accomplishment.
Participants must pass a 25 yard swim test on the first day of the session. Successful completion of the swim test is mandatory for program participation. Instructors will evaluate swimmers based on their swimming competence and confidence. If a parent has any doubts regarding their child's ability to pass the swim test, a pre-test is highly recommended. Please refer to pre-test procedures included in the registration materials for more detailed information. Uniforms will be provided to all participants and must be worn at all times during the program.
