Gaby Castro came to the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico in 2002. She attended ESL classes at Liberty Adult Education in Brentwood, CA then transferred to Los Medanos College and became a Medical Assistant. When Gaby moved from Mexico to Brentwood, she volunteered to help students at Village Community Resource Center with homework and fun activities. Now she advocates for the mothers in the community who have difficulty with the English language.

Gaby has two children attending schools in the Brentwood Union School District. She is Secretary of the District’s English Learners Advisory Committee (DELAC). In this role she is responsible for documenting meetings and communicating plans for English Learner students to the parent community. Gaby also serves as the President of the ELAC (English Learners Advisory Committee) at Edna Hill Middle School where her daughter is attending eighth grade and is a candidate for the position of President of the ELAC at Brentwood Elementary School where her son attends Kindergarten. Gaby loves being part of the Community Advisory Council at the First Five Center in Brentwood where she learns of family needs (especially families of children ages 0-5) and serves as a spokesperson in order to ensure programs remain relevant to community needs. Gaby is thrilled to be part of VCRC’s Board of Directors because it means she has an opportunity to help her community, the very community that opened their arms to her when she first arrived from Mexico, and the community she has grown to love.
